The Venue

The Silk Mill

Madison at the Mill is located on the top floor of the historic Silk Mill in Orange, VA, a building rich in history and personal significance.

The American Silk Mill opened in 1929 after breaking ground in 1928 and became the nation’s largest producer of silk for parachute cloth during World War II. After closing in 1979, the once-thriving mill fell into disrepair until 1989, when Kent Higginbotham purchased it with a vision to restore its former vitality. Thanks to years of careful renovations, the Silk Mill is once again a cornerstone of the community, now home to restaurants, small businesses, and, of course, Madison at the Mill.

This venue holds a special place in our hearts because of its connection to Elizabeth's family. Her grandfather, Pete Modena, worked at the mill as his first job during World War II, earning just five cents an hour. Each day, he rode a horse-drawn wagon into town to contribute to the vital work happening within those walls.

Choosing this space for our wedding feels like a tribute to his legacy, a celebration of Elizabeth's roots, and a way to create new memories in a place that has meant so much to our family and community.
